Cheney pressed Bush to test Constitutional limits by using military force on US soil to arrest “suspected terrorists”
According to a story in Friday’s New York Times, Vice-President Cheney advocated in 2002 for the Bush administration to send military troops to Buffalo to arrest the so-called Lackawanna Six as enemy combatants.
This would have violated both Fourth Amendment guarantees against search and seizure without probable cause and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which makes it illegal to use the military for law enforcement.
Despite those prohibitions, Cheney argued that the president did have the power to use the military on US soil, citing an October 23, 2001 Justice Department memorandum co-authored by John Yoo which claimed that presidential power extended to the domestic use of the military as long as it served a national security purpose.
The Lackawanna Six were a group of young Yememi-Americans who had attended an al Qaeda training camp in 2001. They were arrested in September 2002, and President Bush bragged of having broken their “cell” in his January 2003 State of the Union address.

IMPERIAL, Calif. — Ten minutes into arrant mayhem in this town near the Mexican border, and the gunman, a disgruntled Iraq war veteran, has already taken out two people, one slumped in his desk, the other covered in blood on the floor. The responding officers — eight teenage boys and girls, the youngest 14 — face tripwire, a thin cloud of poisonous gas and loud shots — BAM! BAM! — fired from behind a flimsy wall. They move quickly, pellet guns drawn and masks affixed.“United States Border Patrol! Put your hands up!” screams one in a voice cracking with adolescent determination as the suspect is subdued.

Study: 1 in 31 U.S. adults in prison system
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29469360/
NEW YORK – The number of offenders on parole and probation across the United States has surged past 5 million, complicating the challenges for fiscally ailing states as they try to curb corrections costs without jeopardizing public safety, according to a new report. The Pew Center on the States report, released Monday, says the number of people on probation or parole nearly doubled to more than 5 million between 1982 and 2007. Including jail and prison inmates, the total population of the U.S. corrections system now exceeds 7.3 million — one of every 31 U.S. adults, it said. The report also noted huge discrepancies among the states in regard to the total corrections population — one of every 13 adults in Georgia and one of every 18 in Idaho at one end of the scale, one of every 88 in New Hampshire at the other extreme. The racial gap also was stark — one of every 11 black adults is under correctional supervision, one of every 27 Hispanic adults, one of every 45 white adults.
Transportation Agency Attempts to GPS Geotag Every Car and Charge Drivers by Mileage

Last week Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood floated the idea of a mileage tax. “The idea — which involves tracking drivers through Global Positioning System (GPS) units in their cars — is gaining support in some states as a way of making up for a shortfall in highway funding,” reports CNN. It didn’t take long for Obama to reject the idea — at least for now. The National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission report rolling out the mileage tax is designed not to foist this intrusive technology on the American people in the short term, but rather get them acclimated to the idea of being tracked and taxed. “The White House was somewhat premature,” commission Chairman Robert Atkinson told Bloomberg. “It’s absolutely critical that we look at it. The members of Congress that are committed to a robust transportation system are certainly very aware of the risks of that system not having as much money as it needs because of the stated policy of the Obama administration.” According to Atkinson and the panel, the so-called stimulus bill won’t be sufficient to meet highway-funding needs and financing programs in partnership with private companies “can play an important supplementary role.”
ACTION ALERT! Call and Email Your Congress Critter and Governor: Stop HR 645 Authorizing FEMA camps Inside the US and Second Amendment Ammunition Infringements

Here is a list of all states that are considering the statute. Be sure to contact all Congressman and Governors in the affected states. The whole crux of the argument of the ammunition accountability act makes it impossible to sell ammunition that is not stamped with a serial. Marijuana was made essentially illegal under the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act which made it illegal to sell marijuana without a tax stamp and the Federal Government made the tax stamp virtually unavailable to the general public.

In response to a recent rise in public surveillance funding by the Department of Homeland Security, ACLU’s Technology and Liberty program has launched a Web site to let America know – YouAreBeingWatched.us. The Web site provides news related to public video surveillance, links for more information, ways to take action, a ‘horror stories’ tab detailing recent misuse of surveillance authority and a flash map of locations in the US where municipal surveillance cameras have been installed.
ABC News Pathetically Tries to Smokescreen High Altitude Total Surveillance Blimps as UFOs for Northcom
Although its not exactly shocking to hear of yet another homeland security application that seems to border on Big Brother, Lockheed Martins High Altitude Airship could keep an elevated eye on 600 miles of US countryside at any given time, and if all goes as planned, well have 11 of these things floating over our everyday activities by the end of the decade. The HAA prototype is a ginormous airship that measures 17-times larger than the Goodyear rendition were all used to seeing above sporting events, and is designed to hover 12 miles above the earth in order to keep tabs on whats happening below. The airship is slated to be solar-powered and should stay in a geocentric orbit for “up to a year,” and if equipped with high-resolution cameras, a single one could cover everything “between Toledo, Ohio and New York City.” While Lockheed Martin is thrilled with the $40 million project theyve been awarded, its certainly understandable to get a little worried about how these blimps will actually be used, but a company spokesperson suggested then an entire fleet could actually be used for “border surveillance” — and hey, we need a little help down there anyway, right?

fMRI Technology Advancing Towards Precog Crime: How Technology May Soon “Read” Your Mind
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/12/31/60minutes/main4694713.shtml?tag=topStories;secondStory
As correspondent Lesley Stahl reports, neuroscience research into how we think and what we’re thinking is advancing at a stunning rate, making it possible for the first time in human history to peer directly into the brain to read out the physical make-up of our thoughts, some would say to read our minds. The technology that is transforming what once was science fiction into just plain science is a specialized use of MRI scanning called “functional MRI,” fMRI for short. It makes it possible to see what’s going on inside the brain while people are thinking.
