Positive Evolutionary Selection in Action: Environmental Terrorist Monsanto Unleashes Roundup Resistant “Superweed” in Georgia

http://www.france24.com/en/20090418-superweed-explosion-threatens-monsanto-heartlands-genetically-modified-US-crops
The gospel of high-tech genetically modified (GM) crops is not sounding quite so sweet in the land of the converted. A new pest, the evil pigweed, is hitting headlines and chomping its way across Sun Belt states, threatening to transform cotton and soybean plots into weed battlefields. In late 2004, “superweeds” that resisted Monsanto’s iconic “Roundup” herbicide, popped up in GM crops in the county of Macon, Georgia. Monsanto, the US multinational biotech corporation, is the world’s leading producer of Roundup, as well as genetically engineered seeds. Company figures show that nine out of 10 US farmers produce Roundup Ready seeds for their soybean crops.Superweeds have since alarmingly appeared in other parts of Georgia, as well as South Carolina, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri, according to media reports. Roundup contains the active ingredient glyphosate, which is the most used herbicide in the USA.How has this happened? Farmers over-relied on Monsanto’s revolutionary and controversial combination of a single “round up” herbicide and a high-tech seed with a built-in resistance to glyphosate, scientists say. Today, 100,000 acres in Georgia are severely infested with pigweed and 29 counties have now confirmed resistance to glyphosate, according to weed specialist Stanley Culpepper from the University of Georgia.

BREAKING: Germany Bans Cultivation of Monsanto GM Corn

http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,618913,00.html
Germany has banned the cultivation of GM corn, claiming that MON 810 is dangerous for the environment. But that argument might not stand up in court and Berlin could face fines totalling millions of euros if American multinational Monsanto decides to challenge the prohibition on its seed.
The sowing season may be just around the corner, but this year German farmers will not be planting gentically modified crops: German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner announced Tuesday she was banning the cultivation of GM corn in Germany. Under the new regulations, the cultivation of MON 810, a GM corn produced by the American biotech giant Monsanto, will be prohibited in Germany, as will the sale of its seed. Aigner told reporters Tuesday she had legitimate reasons to believe that MON 810 posed “a danger to the environment,” a position which she said the Environment Ministry also supported. In taking the step, Aigner is taking advantage of a clause in EU law which allows individual countries to impose such bans.

Global Pirate Banksters Look to Inflict a Manufactured Drought on California to Pull an Enron with Water through their Tool Arnold the Gropenfuhrer

http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE51Q5XC20090228
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday declared a state emergency due to drought and said he would consider mandatory water rationing in the face of nearly $3 billion in economic losses from below-normal rainfall this year. As many as 95,000 agricultural jobs will be lost, communities will be devastated and some growers in the most economically productive farm state simply are not able to plant, state officials said, calling the current drought the most expensive ever. Schwarzenegger, eager to build controversial dams as well as more widely backed water recycling programs, called on cities to cut back water use or face the first ever mandatory state restrictions as soon as the end of the month.

AP Exclusive: Bad peanuts found before outbreak

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090130/ap_on_go_ot/med_salmonella_outbreak
WASHINGTON – Weeks before the earliest signs of a national salmonella outbreak that now has been traced to peanuts from a Georgia processing plant, peanuts exported by the same company were found to be contaminated and were returned to the United States, The Associated Press has learned. The rejected shipment — coming over the U.S. border across a bridge between New York and Canada — was logged by the Food and Drug Administration but never was tested by federal inspectors, according to the government’s own records. The chopped peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America in Blakely, Ga., were prevented by the FDA from being allowed back into the United States in mid-September because the peanuts contained an unspecified “filthy, putrid or decomposed substance, or is otherwise unfit for food,” according to an FDA report of the incident.
…knowing that this Federal Government has been a veritable cock roach infestation of pathological liars at least its last hundred years of existence, I fully expect any “reforms” motivated out of this incident focusing “on protecting the consumer” will target the average independent producer and allow this type of behavior to continue unabated by corporate monstrosities (most likely by setting up another regulatory agency that corporate giants get to set the standard operating procedure per the usual historical patterns).

Officials: Firm knew about salmonella, shipped anyway (meanwhile the Federal Government wants independent farmers to RFID all animals while exempting corporate agriproducers and allow animals to sue humans to further strip animal ownership from independent farmers)

http://www.newsday.com/news/printedition/longisland/ny-lisalm286014611jan28,0,5989227.story
Operators of the Georgia peanut-processing plant at the center of a nationwide salmonella outbreak knew of bacteria at the facility as early as 2007, but continued to ship their peanut butter and paste to dozens of companies, federal health officials said yesterday. An investigation of the Peanut Corp. of America’s plant in Blakely, Ga., has revealed at least four strains of salmonella associated with the facility, investigators from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The company received tests from private labs revealing salmonella contamination in 2007, but then got further sampling showing the facility to be salmonella-free, federal officials said yesterday. The FDA will post the investigation’s findings on its Web site today. More than 500 people are known to have been sickened by one of the strains, which may have contributed to the deaths of eight people. Federal investigators have not yet linked any illness to the other three strains.
…this is where the concept of the money bomb can be best used for independent farmers and food co-ops to kick big agribusiness like Monsanto in the teeth.

Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html
MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) — Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies. HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average. “Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies. In the first study, researchers found detectable levels of mercury in nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS. The study was published in current issue of Environmental Health.
…meanwhile, the Federal Government wants independent farmers to RFID tag all their animals while major agriproducers are immune while swatting local food co-ops.

More peanut products recalled, US probe continues… Meanwhile, Local and State Governments Use Federal Money to Swat Food Co-ops Selling CLEAN Food

http://www.reuters.com/article/americasRegulatoryNews/idUSN1930956020090119
WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (Reuters) – U.S. food companies recalled more products containing peanut butter as the U.S. government continued its investigation into an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning that have may have contributed to six deaths. General Mills Inc (GIS.N) voluntarily recalled two varieties of peanut butter-flavored snack bars, saying peanut butter in the products was sourced from Peanut Corp of America (PCA) and may be contaminated with salmonella. Illinois-based Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products recalled all Wal-Mart Bakery brands of peanut butter cookies sold in the in-store bakery sections of Wal-Mart Stores, as well as its Lofthouse brand and Food Lion brand peanut butter cookies. Tennessee-based McKee Foods Corp said it was recalling two varieties of “Little Debbie” peanut butter sandwich crackers that could potentially be contaminated. Michigan-based grocer and retailer Meijer recalled two types of its Meijer Brand sandwich crackers and two types of Meijer Brand ice cream sold in its stores and gas stations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

As Recession Deepens, So Does Milk Surplus

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/02/business/02dairy.html?hp
FOWLER, Calif. — The long economic boom, fueled by easy credit that allowed people to spend money they did not have, led to a huge oversupply of cars, houses and shopping malls, as recent months have made clear. Now, add one more item to the list: an oversupply of cows. And it turns out that shutting down the milk supply is not as easy as closing an automobile assembly line. As a breakneck expansion in the global dairy industry turns to bust, Roger Van Groningen gets to deal with the consequences. In a warehouse that his company runs here, 8 to 20 trucks pull up every day to unload milk powder. Bags of the stuff — surplus that nobody will buy, at least not at a price the dairy industry regards as acceptable — are unloaded and stacked into towering rows that nearly fill the warehouse. Mr. Van Groningen’s company does not own the surplus milk powder, but merely stores it for the new owners: the taxpayers of the United States. To date, the government has spent about $91 million to buy up sacks of milk powder. “The thing is, they are going to produce it because they have to milk the cows,” Mr. Van Groningen said. “It’s like a river. It keeps coming.” The bags of milk powder represent a startling reversal of fortune for the dairy industry, which flourished in recent years thanks in part to a growing appetite for milk, cheese, ice cream and pizza in places like Mexico, Egypt and Indonesia. Many of those countries, of course, were benefiting from a global economic boom led by free-spending consumers in the United States.
