COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (AFP) – - Record-breaking Olympic champion Michael Phelps has been suspended for three months by USA Swimming after a published photograph appeared to show him smoking marijuana. The national governing body of the sport stressed that the punishment was not for a doping violation, but said they wanted to send a “strong message” to Phelps about his status as a role model for young people.

Kellogg’s will not renew Michael Phelps’ endorsement deal when the Olympic swimmer’s contract with the company expires at the end of the month, an inside source confirmed to CNBC. “We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic team,” a Kellogg spokeswoman said in a statement first obtained by Ad Age. “Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”

Well now…maybe the story today on the Drudge Report–featuring a possible photograph of uber-Olympian and champion pitch man Michael Phelps indulging in some marijuana use with a nice, big glass bong–may finally explain why, when I’m in Baltimore, business owners and some in the media often ask me “if Michael Phelps is a big NORML supporter?” My usual reply is ‘no, not as far as I know. Why?’
…and now with all of Phelps’ sponsors declaring Marijuana a non-issue as the Netherlands has many many years ago, Phelps could actually capitalize from this vicious media smearing. If Phelps should apologize for ANYTHING, he should apologize for not setting a better example for the MANY, MANY athletes that occasionally use cannabis by not consuming cannabis from a vaporizer. Although many studies prove that cannabis smoke is non-carcinogenic, inhaled extremely hot air can still cause pulmonary fibrosis (where alveoli in the lungs are converted to fibrous connective tissue) and emphysema (over the span of decades and decades of heavy smoking). If Michael Phelps endorsed the Volcano Vaporizer (the BMW M-5 equivalent of cannabis consumption), I bet sales of the Volcano would skyrocket. Pot is big business, and by not regulating and taxing weed like alcohol local, state, and federal government are squandering an opportune business venture.

MANCHESTER, England — Two of Michael Phelps’ leading sponsors expressed support for the Olympic great Monday, a day after he apologized for being photographed in a British newspaper inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega termed Phelps’ actions a private matter and “nonissue.” Swim wear manufacturer Speedo called the 23-year-old American a “valued member of the Speedo team.” Phelps acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” after the photo appeared Sunday in the tabloid News of the World. Speedo gave Phelps a $1 million bonus for his record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. Phelps joined Speedo in 2001, a year after making his Olympic debut in Sydney. He dominated the Beijing Games in the company’s high-tech LZR Racer suit.
